Cape Girardeau is known throughout Missouri for its achievements in education. High standards of qualification for administrators and teachers, along with support of its citizens, has provided us with an excellent school system. Approximately 4,500 students attend the Cape Girardeau public school system.
There are five elementary schools in Cape Girardeau, kindergarten through 4th grade:
Central Middle School (5th & 6th grades) is a district-wide attendance center and provides a smooth transition from elementary school to junior high school. Central Junior High School (CJHS) is an Accelerated School, and offers programs designed to address the educational, social and emotional needs of students making the transition to the secondary school environment. CJHS boasts football facilities, two gyms, a pool, an auditorium, 3 computer labs and an extensive library.
Central High School (CHS) (9th through 12th grades) opened its doors in August, 2002. Located on the same campus as the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center, CHS students are offered one of the most diverse educational programs on one campus of any secondary school in the state of Missouri & beyond.
In addition to the public schools, a number of excellent parochial schools exist: two Catholic grade schools and a high school, Notre Dame Regional High School, which opened in August of 1998. Trinity Lutheran School has preschool through eighth grade, as do several other Christian schools.
Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center (CTC) is a state-of-the-art facility offering career training for secondary students from eleven area school districts and post-secondary students for the entire region. Students have access to certified programs including health care (e.g., careers in health, respiratory therapy, paramedicts, practical nursing) trade and technical (e.g., welding, carpentry, HVAC), business (e.g., computer technology), culinary arts, and customer services.
Southeast Missouri State University's (SEMO) enrollment stands at nearly 9,000 and ranks as one of the finest universities in Missouri. It has also been ranked as one of America's "Best Colleges" by U.S. News and World Report. It offers an array of educational opportunities, cultural events and recreational activities to the area.
HISTORY
Founded in 1806, by Louis Lorimer, the city of Cape Girardeau quickly became a river boom town and the busiest port between St. Louis and Memphis. During the Civil War, the city was occupied by Union forces, and one of the four forts they built still stands today.
Following the war, Cape continued its growth and became an important educational center in 1873 with the founding of Southeast Missouri State University. Cape continued to expand and is the largest population and economic activity center between St. Louis, 120 miles to the north, and Memphis, 160 miles to the south. The population within the city's 40 mile trade area is over 300,000 with a workforce of over 140,000. Cape serves as the regional hub for retail trade, service facilities, medical services, education, culture and commerce for all of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.
Cape Girardeau now has more than 34,000 inhabitants and is known as both the City of Roses and the River city. The city adopted a home-rule charter in 1981 and is governed by a seven-member city council, whose members are elected by the ward system. Cape residents are friendly and outgoing and lead active lives by taking advantage of the great variety of sports, recreational and community activities available. Famous in the region for its beautiful and numerous parks conveniently located throughout the area, Cape offers recreational opportunities for all ages.

Opened in 1987, the $16.5 million facility has featured such celebrities as Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Longhorn Rodeo, Disney on Ice and Bob Hope.

Residents of the Cape Girardeau area are kept updated on local, regional, national and international news through all major sources of media, including newspaper, radio and television.
The Southeast Missourian newspaper is locally owned and published daily. Tipoff Magazine, published monthly and distributed free of charge, informs residents and visitors of upcoming cultural, entertainment and business programs.
Two local television stations serve residents well, providing quick, reliable coverage of regional as well as national news stories. One of the stations, KBSI Fox 23, benefits the community by sponsoring and publicizing numberous local events such as the SEMO District Fair, Community Theater, the Arts & Balloon Festival and the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band's seasonal performances at Capaha Park.
KFVS-TV, channel 12, serves as the CBS affiliate for nearly 50 counties in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, Western Tennessee and Northeast Arkansas. KFVS broadcasts more than 20 hours of live local news per week, including five newscasts per day during the week and four per day on the weekend.
Ten radio stations render a vide variety of music and news styles.
